We just finished our first series of Life Skills 101 classes! Attendance varied between 2-6 students each week, with one student attending every single class, which earned them two $50 gift cards of their choice!
Four volunteers and I took turns each week teaching the class. Topics included: Knowing and Believing in Yourself, Taking Care of Yourself, Communication & Collaboration, Community Connections, Job Skills, Time & Money Management, and Housing Help. Our last class was a time of reflection and feedback from our students on improving the class going forward. We then headed to Round 1 for bowling and arcade games for celebration and fun!
When creating the curriculum for this class, we hoped our students would walk away with a sense of purpose, hope & confidence. Most of our guests didn’t grow up with parents or role models who encouraged or supported them. We want our guests to know we believe in them and will continue to show up for them. This class is an opportunity to share our personal experiences and wisdom with youth who haven’t had someone invest in them before.
My favorite part of this class was hearing our student’s perspectives and personal experiences, and then learning and growing together. And my second favorite part was celebrating our time together! We decided we should end the series with a time of celebration because when you are living on the streets and just trying to survive, there isn’t much time to relax and have fun. And I’ll tell you what, we definitely had fun!
We look forward to starting our next session on September 14th and seeing how God continues to use us to impact the lives of the youth who show up. We appreciate your prayers!
