A little over a year ago, I walked into the drop-in for the first time as a junior intern. I clearly remember setting foot in that small church basement, being simultaneously overwhelmed and captivated by all that was happening. Little did I know, the youth I would encounter would radically change my life and my perspective of the world.
When I first started, the Life Discovery Program had quite a few of our youth in it. I remember hearing about the LDP and thinking to myself, “Wow, this is the type of thing that changes lives”. I had no idea at the time that I would end up adopting it as my own and adapting it to the needs of the youth, as well as the direction Hosea is heading towards. Over the past six months, I’ve been able to work with so many incredible humans who took the rolls of students, teachers, and mentors, to name a few. We had about six weeks of cooking classes where our interns and volunteers taught the youth a few recipes, and we will begin our finance series next week! These are the trial run classes that we will base the Life Discovery Program off of in the future, and it has been such a joy getting to have the opportunity to have a hand in how the program is structured.
If you or anyone you know would be interested in teaching a class or leading an event/activity, please let me know! We’ll be teaching on finances over the next eight weeks, followed by the Summer Intensive Program, and then the next series of Personal Skills and Cooking. If you have a passion for any of these areas and would like to teach a class, we are always looking for teachers!
If you’d like to be involved with the youth as a mentor or volunteer, then we are always looking for more people to join us in investing in these youth.
To those of you who have had a hand in the program at any time, thank you so very much. It’s been a pleasure getting to know the youth through this program, and I cannot wait to see where it goes!
